How We Became THINK Pender Strong

In the quaint town of Burgaw, a remarkable story of community spirit and compassion unfolded, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of a family in need. This journey began with the generous donation of a mobile home to Pender County Christian Services (PCCS) and evolved into a community-wide mission to provide a safe and loving home for a family that had been grappling with homelessness since the devastating impact of Hurricane Florence.

The transformation of the mobile home into a warm and welcoming abode was not just a renovation project; it was a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of community collaboration. Volunteers from the Knights of Columbus, local churches, and residents of Pender County rallied together, driven by a shared commitment to make a tangible difference in the lives of their neighbors.

While it certainly took a village, at the forefront of this endeavor was Joey McClain, an Army veteran and a passionate advocate for community service, who not only accepted the mobile home donation but also spearheaded the renovation efforts. McClain’s leadership and dedication were instrumental in navigating the challenges that accompanied the project. His hands-on approach and unwavering resolve exemplified the community’s collective spirit and determination to restore dignity and provide a sense of belonging to a family in dire need.

The project saw an impressive collaboration among various sectors of the community. From skilled tradesmen and general contractors to town staff and local business owners, each contributed their unique skills, resources, and time to turn the dream of a family home into reality. This initiative was more than just renovating a home; it was about building a foundation for hope and a future.

Sue Sava, Pender County’s Director of Housing, echoed the sentiments of gratitude and pride in the collective effort that made this transformation possible. She highlighted the unity and shared mission that drove civil servants, business owners, non-profit organizations, and compassionate individuals to work hand-in-hand, embodying the true essence of community service.

The culmination of this heartwarming project was a Thank-You Ceremony held on Veteran’s Day, hosted by The THINK Project and the American Legion Post 294. This event not only served as a recognition of the hard work and dedication of all those involved but also as a celebration of the spirit of unity and compassion that defined the entire project.

Helping this family in need of a home is what inspired THINK Pender Strong! A community coming together to help a family in need is a powerful reminder of the impact of collective action and the profound difference a united community can make. It stands as a living testament to the idea that together, we can overcome challenges and transform lives, one home at a time!
