Bringing the Help to Your Doorstep: The Evolution of Pender Unity Resource Expos

Pender County is our home, and it is a beautiful, vast landscape of over 870 square miles. However, for many of our neighbors, that distance is a barrier. With no county-wide public transportation and many of our residents living in deeply rural areas like Maple Hill, Caswell, and Willard, a centralized event in Burgaw isnโ€™t always enough.

Weโ€™ve realized that to truly serve Pender County, we canโ€™t wait for the people to come to the resourcesโ€”we must bring the resources to the people.

From One Big Event to Many Micro Moments

Historically, the Pender Unity Resource Expo (PURE) was a massive annual gathering. While successful, we saw that those who needed help the most often couldnโ€™t find a ride to get there.

Our new strategy is two-fold:

  1. PURE Micro Expos: Smaller, localized resource fairs held directly in community hubs (churches, fire departments, and community centers) across the county.
  2. Micro Resource Centers: Permanent or semi-permanent “resource pods” stocked with emergency food, hygiene kits, and hurricane preparedness supplies, located in the heart of rural neighborhoods.

PURE Micro Expos

A “Micro Expo” is a targeted, high-impact event designed for a specific neighborhood. By scaling down, we create a more intimate environment where residents can actually talk to service providers without the overwhelming crowds of a large-scale convention.

Why Micro Expos Work:

  • Accessibility: No need for a 30-mile drive. We set up where you already live, shop, or worship.
  • Trust: We partner with local leaders who know their neighbors by name.
  • Targeted Support: A Micro Expo in a farming community might focus more on agricultural resources, while one in a coastal area might focus on flood resilience.

Micro Resource Centers

Constant Support in a Rural Landscape

In a rural county, a crisis doesn’t follow a schedule. When a storm hits or a family runs out of essentials, they need help now, not next year at an expo.

Micro Resource Centers will be localized hubs stocked with high-priority survival items and information on resources to support neighbors in need. By establishing these centers in existing trusted locationsโ€”like local churches or small businessesโ€”we ensure that Pender County remains “Pender Strong” every single day of the year.

Call to Action – Individuals, Leaders, & Businesses

We Need Local Champions. Is it You?

THINK Pender Strong is a neighbor-led movement. We provide the resources and the framework, but we need you to provide the space and the local heartbeat.

For Community Leaders & Pastors

You know your flock better than anyone. By hosting a PURE Micro Expo at your facility, you are opening a door for your members to access healthcare screenings, veterans’ benefits, and housing assistance in a place where they already feel safe.

For Business Owners

Could your storefront host a Micro Resource Center? A small corner of your shop dedicated to emergency supplies can save a life during hurricane season. It shows your customers that you aren’t just doing business in Penderโ€”you are invested in it.

For Individuals

Whether itโ€™s volunteering to staff a local expo or helping us transport supplies to a Micro Resource Center, every hand makes the load lighter.
